A winner of 17 grand slams, the 32-year-old did not win any of the four majors this year and the genius has slipped to No.7 in the world.
The Swiss star lost his first match at the O2 to Novak Djokovic but climbed off the bottom of Group B by beating Richard Gasquet 6-4, 6-3.
Next up is a tough battle against Juan Martin del Potro, who also beat Gasquet before falling to Djokovic, and barring a mathematical fluke the winner will advance to the semi-finals.
Federer beat Del Potro at the Paris Masters last week after losing to the Argentinian in the final at Basle and victory this time round is no certainty.
‘I think the win in Paris was big for me because he beat me three times indoors straight, the Basle finals twice and also here last year,’ Federer said.
‘I’m glad I got one back in Paris because I knew we could again be in the same group, we could be playing each other [here in London].
‘That win for me in Paris psychologically was very important. I truly believe my confidence is higher and that’s what I need to beat the best and Juan Martin is part of that group
